An HR (Heavy Rigid) license permits you to drive heavy vehicles, including trucks and buses with three or more axles and a GVM exceeding 8 tonnes. This license is essential for drivers in industries such as freight, logistics, and public transportation.
To apply for an HR license, you must have held a valid car license for at least two years, pass a theory test on road rules and vehicle operations, and meet medical fitness requirements as defined by Austroads guidelines.
HR license training is comprehensive, typically lasting 2 to 3 days. It includes practical driving sessions, vehicle safety checks, reversing exercises, and manoeuvring techniques in confined spaces to ensure you are well-prepared for the test and real-world driving.
No, an HR license covers rigid vehicles only. To drive articulated vehicles like semi-trailers, you would need to obtain a Heavy Combination (HC) or Multi Combination (MC) license through further training.
An HR license significantly expands your career options in industries requiring heavy vehicle operation. It also provides the skills and qualifications needed to transition into roles such as interstate trucking, waste management, or bus driving.
