Depending on your class, you’ll complete either a Vehicle On Road Test (VORT) with an authorised examiner or Competency-Based Training and Assessment (CBT&A) with an accredited instructor.

To become a truck driver in South Australia:
CBT&A stands for Competency-Based Training and Assessment. It’s a flexible method of training where you work with an accredited instructor to complete specific competencies at your own pace. Once all competencies are achieved, you’ll receive your heavy vehicle licence without needing a traditional driving test.
GVM stands for Gross Vehicle Mass. It’s the maximum loaded weight the manufacturer allows for the vehicle, including the vehicle itself, its load and its fuel. You’ll usually find it on the vehicle’s compliance plate. GVM and the number of axles decide which licence class you need.

TiLE (Training-in-Lieu of Experience) is a fast-track method to obtain a HC (Heavy Combination) licence. It’s designed for car licence holders with at least two years of experience. The process includes a two-day theory course, a practical training session, and assessments.
Yes, if you’re at least 19 and have held your car licence for two years or more. If you’ve held your car licence for a shorter time, you can start with an LR or MR licence and move up to HR after one year on that class. Either way, we’ll help you plan the quickest sensible path.
